Aboriginal Family and Relationship Support


RAV provides support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and individuals to help strengthen family relationships.

Counselling provides an opportunity to talk with a professionally trained person to discuss couple issues, conflicts with friends, relationship breakdown, parenting, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, grief, sexual problems, childhood sexual abuse, stress and work related tensions and disputes.

About headspace

headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12 – 25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

 

About the role:

The purpose of the Youth Access Worker position is to effectively engage, screen, assess, refer, provide brief interventions and to coordinate care for young people aged 12-25 years that are referred to the headspace centre in the East Gippsland and Wellington local Government catchment areas. The role reports to the Centre Manager, headspace Bairnsdale. Access workers are part of a multi-disciplinary team, including general practitioners, allied health clinicians, community engagement workers, and support staff.

 

Qualifications and Registrations:  

  • Tertiary qualifications in health, behavioural/social sciences, community services or a related discipline.
  • Current full registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) or current membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) preferred.

Essential experience 

  • The ability and experience to undertake intake and screening activities to determine client needs.
  • The ability and experience to conduct risk assessments, including suicide and violence risks.
  • Ability to deliver brief therapeutic interventions, counselling services and treatment planning.

Knowledge and skills:  

  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health, including related evidence-based interventions and clinical practice.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a diverse range of people, in particular the ability to engage with young people and advocate on their behalf.

This role is based in Bairnsdale at our headspace centre. headspace Bairnsdale is open 10am-6pm business days, except Tuesday when the centre is open 12pm-8pm. For this role, the successful candidate will be required to work a late evening on Tuesdays and start before 10am on some occasions to meet the needs of the school schedule. This is a part-time (2 days, 14hours per week), fixed-term contract until 30 June 2022 with the opportunity for extension subject to renewed funding.
